Skulduggery Pleasant
Stephanie's uncle Gordon wrote horror fiction, and when he dies and leaves her his estate she discovers that what he wrote was not invented.
About
Skulduggery Pleasant is a fantasy novel by the Irish writer Derek Landy, published by HarperCollins in 2007.
Stephanie is twelve when her uncle Gordon dies and leaves her his house and everything in it. Gordon wrote horror stories for a living, and it turns out that they were not stories: the things in them exist, and some of the people who want what he left behind are prepared to hurt her to get it. The help she gets comes from Skulduggery Pleasant, who is a detective, a magician and, as he cheerfully admits, dead, and whose heart and the rest of his body have been missing for some time. He takes her on as a partner, which she is not qualified to be, and the pair of them work on recovering a key that several other parties want.
The book opens a long series, and Stephanie ends up involved in the world her uncle had been writing about all along.
