Rigg, Umbo and Param get through the wall and out of Ramfold, and keep going, through fold after fold and back into the past as well.

About

Ruins is a science fiction novel by the American writer Orson Scott Card, published in 2012. It is the second book of the Pathfinder series and continues the story of the boy Rigg and the ability he has.

Rigg, Umbo and Param escape through the wall at the beginning of the novel, leaving Ramfold for the first time in their lives, and the book follows them as they travel through other folds and into the past. They are trying to understand the history of life on their planet, Garden, so that they can find a way to avoid the future they have seen.

The man waiting on the other side of the wall, who looks exactly like Rigg's father, is the expendable for that fold, a man named Vadesh. He warns them not to drink the water, which carries a parasite that attaches itself to its host in a form called a facemask. His fold has no people left in it at all, and when Rigg and Umbo travel back through its history they learn how that happened and what Vadesh had to do with it. The trilogy concludes with Visitors.
