Promise of the Rose
Mary is the daughter of the King of Scotland and a prisoner of the Norman invaders, and she refuses to tell them who she is, even when it would make her captivity easier.
About
Promise of the Rose is a historical romance by the American writer Brenda Joyce, published in 1993 and the second book of her deWarenne Dynasty series.
The novel is set in the eleventh century, in the period after the Norman conquest of England, with the Scottish court and its wars in the background. Mary is the daughter of the Scottish king, and when she is captured by the Normans she keeps her identity to herself rather than trade on it, which leaves her a prisoner with no value to her captors and a great deal to lose. The man holding her is Stephen de Warenne, a soldier who has been given his lands by right of conquest and who intends to keep what has been given to him. Joyce writes a medieval romance built on the two of them being on opposite sides of a war, and it is part of a series about the same family across several generations.
The deWarenne novels continue through the family's later generations, and this volume is the second of them.
