Outlander
Claire Randall, who served as a nurse in the war, is travelling in the Scottish Highlands in 1945 when a standing stone takes her to 1743, into a country of raiding clans and a Jacobite rising not yet begun.
About
Diana Gabaldon began the first volume of what became the Outlander series in the late 1980s, and it was published in 1991. The novel opens in 1945 with Claire Beauchamp Randall, who served as a nurse during the war and is travelling in the Scottish Highlands on a second honeymoon with her husband, Frank. Walking near a standing stone, she is carried back to Scotland in 1743, into a country of raiding clans and a Jacobite rising that has not yet begun.
Unfamiliar with the place and clearly out of her own time, Claire is taken in by a clan that does not know what to make of an Englishwoman in unfamiliar dress, and the arrangement that offers her the most protection is marriage to Jamie Fraser, a young Highlander who already has a price on his head. The novel sets her knowledge of the twentieth century against the politics and dangers of the eighteenth, and her ties to the life she left behind against the one she has been pulled into.
Outlander began a series that Gabaldon has continued across nine published volumes out of a planned ten, the ninth being Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone, released on 23 November 2021. The series has also produced related works, among them the novels following the recurring character Lord John Grey.
