About
Once Is Not Enough is a novel by the American writer Jacqueline Susann, published in 1973 and her third.
January Wayne is twenty-one when the novel opens and comes back to New York after nearly three years in a hospital in Switzerland, and the city she returns to has moved on without her. Her father is Mike Wayne, a film and stage producer she adores, and the book follows her through the people she meets in his world, among them the family that owns the money and the expectations, a magazine editor, a novelist and a doctor who is treating her. Susann wrote the book after Valley of the Dolls and The Love Machine, and it is set in the same milieu of show business, psychiatry and ambition, with a daughter's attachment to her father at the middle of it.
The novel was one of the biggest commercial successes of its decade, and with it Susann became the first writer to have three consecutive novels at the top of the New York Times bestseller list.
