About
Colleen Hoover's November 9, published in 2015, begins on the day before Fallon is due to move across the country. She meets Ben, an aspiring novelist, and the two of them spend that last day in Los Angeles together. Her eventful life turns out to be the creative inspiration Ben has been looking for, and rather than starting a relationship they make an agreement: they will meet again on the same date each year, 9 November, and compare what has happened to them since.
The novel follows those annual meetings against the book Ben is writing, which begins to look a great deal like Fallon's life. The two of them spend the intervening years apart, with their own relationships and troubles, and each reunion is set against what has changed in the twelve months before it. Years in, Fallon starts to question how much of what Ben has told her is invention rather than report, and whether the story he has been writing is hers or his.
The whole structure of the book is built around the single date the two of them keep returning to, with each meeting marking a stage in the years that separate them.
