About
Nimona is a science fantasy graphic novel by the American cartoonist N.D. Stevenson, published in 2015.
The title character is a shapeshifter who can take any form and turns up at the door of Lord Ballister Blackheart offering to be his sidekick. Blackheart has been declared a villain by the Institute, which runs the kingdom and decides who the heroes are, and he has a long argument with it to settle. He agrees to work with Nimona, whom he comes to regret and rely on by turns, because the two of them have incompatible ideas about how a villain is supposed to behave: Blackheart has a code and Nimona does not, which is the argument the book keeps returning to. The book was first published as a webcomic and then collected with extra material.
It is a full colour graphic novel and was the author's first, following a webcomic that ran for two years. It has been translated into at least sixteen languages and made into an audiobook, and it has won an Eisner Award, a Cybils Award and a Cartoonist Studio Prize.
