Night Film
A young woman called Ashley Cordova is found dead in New York, and the police treat it as a suicide.
About
Night Film is a mystery thriller by the American writer Marisha Pessl, published in 2013.
McGrath's first attempt to write about the director ended his marriage, his career and his access to his daughter, and the novel is as much about the condition of a reporter who has been discredited as about the case itself. This time he has two people with him: Nora Halliday, a young actress with few prospects and no caution, and a man called Hopper, who knows more about the Cordova family than he explains. Their interviews produce a set of accounts that agree on almost nothing, and Pessl constructs the book so that the reader is consistently unsure whether the strange material around the case belongs to it or to the reporter's imagination. Cordova's films are cult objects that circulate only among enthusiasts, and the novel borrows their texture: the pages include photographs, screenshots of websites and pages from medical files. It was a finalist for the Shirley Jackson Award in 2013 and reached the New York Times bestseller list that September.
