About
My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry is a novel by the Swedish writer Fredrik Backman, published in Swedish in 2013 and in English in 2015.
Elsa's grandmother is her only friend, and Miamas is the kingdom the two of them escape into when school and the neighbours are too much. After the grandmother dies, Elsa is given a task: the letters, which are apologies to people she wronged, and the delivery of them one at a time. The recipients all live in the same apartment building, and they turn out to be the originals of the characters in the stories, including the woman with the dog, the man who drinks and the old woman nobody visits. Backman tells the novel from inside a seven-year-old's understanding, so the reader works out what the adults are hiding before Elsa does, and the fantasy and the block of flats meet in the same story about what a family owes itself.
The English edition appeared in Britain under a different title, My Grandmother Sends Her Regards and Apologises.
