About
Mexican Gothic is a Gothic horror novel by the Mexican Canadian writer Silvia Moreno-Garcia, published in 2020. Its plot turns on a young woman who travels to check on a cousin who says her husband means to kill her, and it won several awards, among them the Aurora Award for Best Novel and the Locus and British Fantasy awards for horror. It is set in 1950s Mexico.
In Mexico City, Noemí Taboada, a young socialite, gets a letter from her cousin Catalina asking for help. Catalina is convinced that her English husband, Virgil Doyle, is out to poison her, and because Virgil may want Catalina's money, her father sends Noemí to High Place, the Doyle family home in the mountains outside the town of El Triunfo.
The Doyles are unwelcoming, Catalina is kept from her, and the house itself starts turning up in Noemí's dreams. The family's English mining fortune and its history in the region are part of what Noemí has to work out, and the house is tied to both. Moreno-Garcia writes the novel in the gothic mode, with a decaying house and a family with secrets.
It is a standalone novel.
