Memories of the Past
Helen will not be taken in by Caleb Jones's charm, however much of it he has.
About
Memories of the Past is a 1991 romance by Carole Mortimer, published by Mills & Boon as a 284-page paperback. It is a later, slightly longer example of the category novel than the 1970s and 1980s titles on the same list, and its conflict is generated entirely by a heroine's judgement of a man rather than by events outside the two of them.
Helen begins with a fixed view. Caleb Jones has charm, and she has decided in advance that charm of that kind is a liability, though her father holds the opposite opinion with some enthusiasm. The novel then sets about testing her position, first by showing Caleb behaving unlike the hard businessman she assumed him to be and then by revealing the responsibility he carries, having raised his young nephew by himself.
Her resistance becomes the subject rather than the obstacle: she keeps finding reasons not to change her mind even as the evidence piles up, and the book's turn comes when she admits to herself what has actually happened. Mills & Boon published this line into the 1990s with the same compact structure it had used for decades, and this is a clean example of the form, where the whole plot is one person deciding whether to trust her own reading of another.
