Memories of Ice
The war against the Pannion Domin brings a coalition of armies, mages and undead into a campaign across a continent.
About
Memories of Ice is an epic fantasy novel by the Canadian writer Steven Erikson and the third volume of his Malazan Book of the Fallen. Its events begin just after the first book, Gardens of the Moon, and run at the same time as the second, Deadhouse Gates.
The novel is built around a campaign: the Pannion Domin is a religious empire whose armies are advancing, and the forces gathered against it include soldiers of the Malazan Empire, a company of Tiste Andii, the undead and a group of mages with very different motives. Erikson gives the book to a large cast and covers the war from several positions, including the enemy's.
Erikson writes the series by dropping the reader into a history much older than the plot, and this volume is one of the most widely praised of the ten. It is best read after the first two books, which it runs alongside rather than follows, it is the volume where the series' scale becomes clear, and its campaign is the one the later books keep referring back to.
