Make Me

Make Me is the twentieth Jack Reacher novel, published in 2015, and it begins with its hero doing the thing he does best, which is arriving somewhere for no reason at all. On this occasion the somewhere is a town called Mother's Rest, planted in the middle of a thousand square miles of wheat, and his reason is that the name is odd and nobody he asks will explain it.

Reacher's company for the book is Michelle Chang, a former FBI agent now working as a private investigator, who has come to town looking for a colleague who vanished while working for a client whose identity she never learned. The pair find almost nothing in his motel room except a name and a phone number, and then they discover that the people who wanted him gone would be happy for them to disappear as well.

Child sends the two of them across the country, through hired assassins and a criminal network with Ukrainian connections, and toward the hidden parts of the internet where the real business is being done. It is one of the later Reacher books, consistent with the rest in method and pace: a stranger with no luggage, a strong sense of proportion, and an enormous amount of trouble for anyone who mistakes his patience for weakness.
