Mackenzie's Mountain
Mary Elizabeth Potter, a schoolteacher who has settled into the idea of being a spinster, arrives in a small Wyoming town with a straightforward request: she wants a boy who has dropped out to come back to school.
About
Mackenzie's Mountain is a 1989 romance by Linda Howard and the first book in the Mackenzies series.
The novel begins with a schoolteacher's professional errand. Mary Elizabeth Potter considers herself a confirmed spinster, has no illusions about romance, and simply wants Wolf Mackenzie's son back in a classroom. What she encounters instead is a father who has been made to pay for something he did not do and who carries the town's judgement of him everywhere.
Her refusal to accept the local verdict is what the book turns on, and it is a romance about a reputation rather than a mystery. Wolf is the one who has to decide whether he and the town are ready for anything to change. Howard built a series of novels around this family, and the small-town dynamics of Ruth, Wyoming, supply the pressure that keeps the two of them from settling the matter quickly. Mary Elizabeth is not a local, which is what lets her ask a question the town had already settled for itself. The town's verdict on Wolf rests on his mixed heritage as much as on the offence he is said to have committed, and his son has already stopped attending school over it.
