Jennifer, Hecate, Macbeth, William McKinley, and me, Elizabeth
Elizabeth has just moved into a large apartment building in a town where almost everyone else lives in a house, and she has made no friends at all by the time she meets Jennifer on the way back to school on Halloween.
About
Jennifer, Hecate, Macbeth, William McKinley, and Me, Elizabeth is a children's novel by the American writer E. L. Konigsburg, published in 1967. It was the first of her books to appear, in the same year as From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler.
Elizabeth, who narrates, has moved into a big apartment building in a town where nearly everyone else lives in a house, and she has not made any friends by the time she meets Jennifer on Halloween day. Jennifer is dressed as a Pilgrim but claims to be a real witch, and after a single Saturday meeting she takes Elizabeth on as her apprentice, with weekly meetings and assignments that begin with eating a raw egg every day and bringing one for Jennifer as well.
The two of them meet only at school, in the library, in the park or in the woods between home and school, and the apprenticeship turns out to be much harder on Elizabeth than she expected it to be. Both of Konigsburg's first two manuscripts were accepted by the same editor, and in 1968 From the Mixed-Up Files won the Newbery Medal while this book was named a Newbery Honor book, which made her the only person to receive both citations in one year.
