It Ends with Us
Lily Bloom leaves her Maine hometown for Boston and builds a business of her own, and meets Ryle Kincaid, a neurosurgeon who is direct about how little he wants from a relationship.
About
Colleen Hoover's It Ends with Us came out from Atria Books on 2 August 2016. Lily Bloom is twenty-three and has just finished college when she moves to Boston hoping to open her own flower shop. She grew up in a household in Maine where her late father, Andrew, physically abused her mother, Jenny, and the effect on Lily was to resent both of them: her father for what he did and her mother for staying. She has recently given the eulogy at her father's funeral, where she named five things she loved most about him, then fell silent for a few seconds and walked away.
In Boston, Lily meets Ryle Kincaid, a neurosurgeon who is direct about how little he wants from a relationship, and the two of them begin a relationship that is abusive. Then Atlas Corrigan, the boy Lily loved in high school, comes back into her life, and the choices she believed she had already settled become much harder to hold on to. The novel follows the distance between the life she set out to build and the one she is living, including the pattern in her own family that she had sworn not to repeat, and it deals directly with domestic violence and emotional abuse.
A sequel, It Starts with Us, followed in October 2022, and the novel was adapted into a feature film released in 2024.
