Violet survived her first year at Basgiath War College when almost nobody expected her to.

About

Iron Flame is the second novel in the Empyrean series and the direct continuation of Rebecca Yarros's story about the dragon riders of Navarre. Red Tower Books published it in the United States on 7 November 2023, with the British editions issued by Little, Brown. The book opens with Violet Sorrengail back at Basgiath War College, promoted, carrying the marks of what she survived and much less certain about the institution she nearly died inside.

The second year at Basgiath is built to cut the surviving cadets down a second time. Training is harder, the injuries are worse, and the command structure has been rearranged around Violet: a new vice commandant wants her to demonstrate how powerless she is by turning on the man she loves. The cadets who came back with her have to keep the attack that nearly killed them secret to stay enrolled, which means lying about the gryphon fliers, the outpost and the officer who arranged the trap.

Underneath the school story sits a larger one. Violet's brother Brennan is alive and holds rank in a rebellion that has been operating inside Navarre for years, and the conspiracy he belongs to is not the one the college teaches. The wards that protect the kingdom, what they hold back and the arrangement that kept the truth off the syllabus are the material the rest of the series works with. Xaden Riorson is stationed at a distant outpost, and the bond between their dragons is what allows the pair to keep meeting.

Two publishing facts belong with the story. Yarros announced the title and the release date two days after Fourth Wing was published, and the second volume runs longer than the first while keeping the same school-calendar structure, with the second year's assessments standing where the first book had its bonding season. The Empyrean was planned as a sequence of five novels, which makes Iron Flame the volume that widens the conflict rather than closing it.
