Into the Drowning Deep
Seven years ago a ship called the Atargatis sailed for the Mariana Trench to film a documentary about legendary sea creatures and was lost with everybody aboard.
About
Into the Drowning Deep is a science fiction horror novel by the American writer Mira Grant, published in 2017. It is a follow-up, on a much larger scale, to her earlier novella Rolling in the Deep.
The first ship belonged to a production company that made cheap films about mythical beasts, and the mockumentary it was shooting became a genuine catastrophe. The wreck was found weeks later with no sign of the crew, and the leaked footage that showed what happened to them was widely dismissed as part of the production.
Victoria Stewart is a sonar specialist whose sister was on board as a reporter, and she has spent the years since trying to find out what happened. She joins the second expedition, a mixed company of scientists, hunters and people with reputations to restore, drawn to the deepest water on the planet. The novel follows the voyage down and the work of the scientists, and the thing that is waiting for them in the trench is not a myth.
