In high places
Annette Klein and her family are agents of Crosstime Traffic, working under cover in an alternate world where the Black Death killed most of Europe and Muslims settled the continent.
About
In High Places is a science fiction novel by the American writer Harry Turtledove, published in 2005 and part of his Crosstime Traffic series.
The world Annette is working in is one where the plague of the fourteenth century was far more deadly than in ours, so that the Christian states of Europe never recovered and the continent was repopulated from the Muslim world. She has been posing as the daughter of a merchant, and the fictional life she has been living is the one that gets her taken. The novel follows her as a slave and the people who own her, and it also follows her family's search, which has to be conducted without revealing what they are. Part of the book takes place in a second alternate world, where Rome never became an empire, and Turtledove uses the two settings to write about religion, slavery and the ordinary relations between people who believe they are enemies.
It is one of the books in a series about a company that trades between alternate worlds, and it gives more space to the late twenty-first-century side than the earlier volumes did.
