One is driven purely by ambition, and another is haunted by the memory of a love she lost. A charming student who has never cared for anybody meets the academy's newest arrival and finds that this time he does. Together they face the tests, which are designed to establish which of them deserves a life, and the relationships that form around the competition are exactly the sort that can be used against the people who have them.

The novel combines the traditions of the magic school and the death game, and its interest is in what six young people are willing to do when survival is a prize rather than a right.
