In July 1916, Chet Roscow is fascinated by the newspaper reports of a great white shark attacking people along the New Jersey shore, not far from the town where he is living.
About
I Survived the Shark Attacks of 1916 is a children's novel by the American writer Lauren Tarshis, published in 2010. It is one of the books in her I Survived series, each of which puts a young character inside a historical disaster.
Chet Roscow is spending the summer of 1916 in a New Jersey town, and the newspapers that summer carry a set of reports that nobody quite believes: a shark is said to be attacking people along the shore, not far from where he is living. Chet is fascinated by the accounts and reads them as entertainment until he goes swimming in Matawan Creek himself, at which point the question becomes whether the boys who insisted there was nothing to worry about will believe what he has seen.
Tarshis writes the series for young readers, with a child close to the centre of each disaster and the historical details kept to what can be verified, and the books have been used in schools as an introduction to the events they describe.
