How to Sell a Haunted House

Grady Hendrix, an American author, published the horror novel How to Sell a Haunted House on 17 January 2023. It is set in South Carolina and concerns two siblings clearing out the house they grew up in after their parents die, and it mixes comedy with horror. It is a standalone novel.

Louise Joyner lives in California and is raising her daughter, Poppy, on her own. One evening her estranged brother Mark telephones with the news that their parents have been killed in a car accident, and she flies with her daughter to the house to get it ready for sale. Clearing it means working with Mark, who stayed in town and resents her for leaving.

The house is packed with what is left of their mother's decades of puppets and dolls and their father's academic papers, and the siblings disagree about what to keep. The house, it turns out, has no intention of being sold, and the haunting is tied to the family's own history rather than to the building alone.

It is a standalone novel rather than the first of a series, and it is one of several of the author's books that use a familiar genre premise with a domestic setting.
