House of Hollow
Three sisters disappeared from a suburban street in Scotland when they were children and came back a month later with no memory of where they had been.
About
House of Hollow is a young adult fantasy novel by the New Zealand author Krystal Sutherland, published in 2021.
Iris, the youngest of the three, has spent the decade since the disappearance trying to be unremarkable, which is difficult when her sisters have become famous and glamorous and she cannot eat enough to gain weight. Grey is a model and Vivi plays in a band, and both of them treat the strange occurrences that follow them as an inconvenience rather than a mystery, which leaves Iris to work out what the family has agreed not to discuss. When Grey goes missing, the search takes her through her sister's last weeks and into the parts of their childhood that none of them can remember, and the novel then has to decide how much of what happened in that month can be explained. Sutherland writes the sisters as a closed unit with its own rules, and the unease of the book comes from how completely the three of them have adapted to being the objects of other people's attention.
