Home Before Dark

Home Before Dark is a thriller by the American writer Riley Sager, published in 2020. It is a haunted house story that turns on the question of whether the haunting in the book at its centre ever happened.

Twenty-five years ago Maggie Holt and her parents moved into Baneberry Hall, a rambling Victorian house in the Vermont woods, and three weeks later they left it in the middle of the night. Her father turned the experience into a memoir, House of Horrors, which became a worldwide phenomenon and made the family famous.

Maggie was too young to remember any of it and has never accepted her father's account. When the house comes to her, she goes back intending to renovate it and to settle the question of what actually happened there, and the novel alternates between her stay in the house and the chapters of her father's book.
