Hex
Black Spring in the Hudson Valley is watched by more cameras than a small town should need.
About
HEX is a horror novel by the Dutch author Thomas Olde Heuvelt, first published in Dutch in 2013 and in English in 2016 by Tor Books. It was the first of his novels to appear in English, translated by Nancy Forest-Flier, and for the English edition the story is relocated to New York's Hudson Valley. Film and television rights have been purchased.
Black Spring in the Hudson Valley is watched by more cameras than a small town should need. The reason is a seventeenth-century woman the locals call the Black Rock Witch, whose mouth and eyes were stitched shut, and who walks the streets and enters houses as she likes. She stands beside children's beds, and everyone knows her eyes must never be opened.
The elders of Black Spring have effectively quarantined the town and use high-tech surveillance to stop the curse from spreading. Frustrated by the restrictions, the town's teenagers decide to break the rules and put the haunting online, which is where the story turns. Heuvelt rewrote the book's ending when he relocated it for English readers.
The novel is a standalone story, and it is written as a modern horror novel about a community that has organised its whole life around a supernatural problem.
