Hearts Aflame

Hearts Aflame is a historical romance by the American writer Johanna Lindsey, published in 1987. It is the second book of her Haardrad Family series.

The story is set in Wessex in 873. Kristen Haardrad is nineteen, beautiful and defiant, and she has become the prisoner of Royce, the Thane of Wyndhurst, who is twenty-seven; she is determined that she will never be his slave. Royce has waited a long time for the chance to deal with the Vikings who raid the Saxon coast, and what he feels for the woman in his household is complicated by a hatred of her people for an old crime that she herself did not commit. The novel follows the two of them through that divided position, and through the distrust that stands between the pride of a Saxon lord and the pride of a Viking woman. The first book of the series, Fires of Winter, precedes it, and Surrender My Love follows it.

Lindsey wrote a long series of historical romances, several of them set among Vikings and Saxons, and this one belongs to a family trilogy.
