Gathering Blue
Kira is orphaned and disabled in a village that has no place for her, and she is taken to live in the Council Edifice, where she is given the work of repairing a ceremonial robe.
About
Gathering Blue is a young adult novel by the American writer Lois Lowry, published on 25 September 2000. It is a companion book to The Giver, published in 1993, set in the same future period and universe and dealing with some of the same questions about who is allowed to decide what a community values.
Kira is a young woman with a twisted leg in a village where the disabled are usually left to die, and when her mother dies she is taken into the Council Edifice. She is a talented weaver, and her work is to repair the robe worn at the village's annual gathering; the job brings her a room, food and protection, and it also brings her into contact with a boy kept there for his singing and with the truth about the building.
Lowry keeps the story small and Kira's voice close, and the dystopia is revealed through the details of how the village treats the people it has decided it does not need. It is one of the novels that follow The Giver.
