Flint
Flint Mahone comes home from the Civil War with one feeling left in him, which is for the children of his dead brother, and when the three of them turn up on his doorstep with a Wyoming winter coming he sets about making them a home.
About
Flint is a historical romance by the American writer Norah Hess, published in 2001.
Flint Mahone returns from the Civil War with very little left in the way of sentiment, and the exception is his dead brother's children, who arrive at his place in Wyoming just as the winter is closing in. Lauren Hart grew up among outlaws and was taught to make her way by gambling, and what she wants is an ordinary life with a house and friends her own age. The novel puts the two of them in the same small frontier community, where the practical arrangements of the place, the weather, the distances and the work that has to be done, keep them in each other's company. Hess wrote a long series of western romances with the same setting and the same kind of capable, stubborn main characters.
The towns, the weather and the work of the frontier are the constant in all of them, and this novel is one of the Wyoming books, with a ranch rather than a town at the centre of it.
