Fiancee Farce
Tansy Adams runs the family bookshop she inherited from her father and has nothing to say when her stepfamily asks about her love life, so she invents a girlfriend based on the woman on a book jacket.
About
Fiancee Farce is a romance by the American writer Alexandria Bellefleur, published in 2023 and set in Seattle.
Tansy's life is the bookshop, which is doing badly, and a family that treats her as a disappointment; the invented girlfriend is a small piece of self-defence that gets out of hand. Gemma is the black sheep of a publishing family, and the condition attached to her inheritance means she has to marry within a set period or lose the company to relatives she does not trust. The arrangement the two of them make is a business matter with terms and a schedule, and the novel follows them trying to keep it that way in front of Gemma's family and Tansy's stepmother. Bellefleur writes it as a comedy of manners with a fake engagement at the centre, and the arguments about the bookshop and the company carry as much of the plot as the romance does.
It is one of the author's romantic comedies, and it takes the familiar shape of the marriage of convenience and updates it.
