Farmer Boy
Almanzo Wilder grows up on a farm in rural New York, and this book describes his childhood from the age of about eight: the work of the farm, his parents and his brothers and sisters, and the education a boy received in a place where the seasons decided what everybody did next.
About
Farmer Boy is a children's historical novel by Laura Ingalls Wilder, published in 1933. It was the second of the Little House books to appear, although it tells a story unconnected to the first.
The subject is Almanzo Wilder, who would later marry Laura Ingalls, and the book follows his childhood on a farm in rural New York State from the age of about eight. The material is the ordinary business of a working farm: crops and livestock, large meals, strict parents, and a boy's education in everything a farmer needs to know. Almanzo's family is introduced in detail, including his father and mother, his brothers and his sisters, and the novel spends its time on the daily labour and the seasonal routines of a household that is prosperous by the standards of the period and works hard to stay that way. Wilder writes a settled life rather than a pioneering one, which makes this book a companion to the rest of the series rather than a continuation of it.
It is often described as the odd one out among the Little House books, since it takes place before the Ingalls family's story begins and in a different part of the country altogether.
