Even now
Shane Galanter is ready to settle somewhere after years of moving, and the woman he has never forgotten is on his mind.
About
Even Now is a novel by the American writer Karen Kingsbury, published in 2002 and the first of two books about the same family.
The three characters are connected by a decision made years earlier, when two young people were separated by adults who thought they knew best and a baby was placed with grandparents. The novel moves between Shane and Lauren as adults, each of them still carrying the relationship that ended, and Emily, who finds the story while working as an intern and starts asking questions her family has avoided. Kingsbury writes of faith and forgiveness as well as romance, and the narrative keeps the misunderstandings of the past and their consequences in the same room, which is the device the whole book turns on. The result is a story about a family that lost thirty years to a decision nobody ever explained.
It was followed by a second novel about the same characters, and it is one of the many books the author has written about family, faith and the long consequences of decisions made by other people, and it was written to be read alongside its sequel.
