Dragon's Fire
Firestone is the mineral that lets the dragons of Pern breathe flame, and the mine that produces it has exploded, killing the men inside.
About
Dragon's Fire is a science fiction novel by the American-Irish writer Anne McCaffrey and her son Todd McCaffrey, published in 2006 and the twentieth book of the Dragonriders of Pern series.
It is the second of three novels by the two of them about a single generation on Pern, between Dragon's Kin and Dragon Harper, and it is set about five hundred years after the colonists landed. The novel is told through three viewpoints rather than one, and the two halves of its plot fit together deliberately: Pellar's chapters supply background that the previous book had left open, while Cristov's account of the mine introduces material that is new to the series, including a kind of firestone that survives being wet. The larger subject is a technological transition, since the dragons are moving from one source of flame to a different rock and the change has to be managed by people who do not know whether it will work. The McCaffreys wrote the later Pern novels together, and this trilogy is the one in which Todd's contribution became the equal of his mother's.
