Dracul
In 1868 a twenty-one-year-old Bram Stoker waits in a deserted tower with crucifixes, holy water and a rifle, and prays to survive the night.
About
Dracul is a horror novel by Dacre Stoker, the great-grandnephew of Bram Stoker, and the American writer J. D. Barker, published in 2018. It is a prequel to Bram Stoker's Dracula of 1897.
The book is built around the young Bram Stoker and the events that the authors present as the background to the novel he later wrote. It begins with him barricaded in a tower and then goes back to his childhood in Ireland, where he was a sickly boy cared for by a nanny named Ellen Crone, and forward to his adult travels, his friendship with the men who become his correspondents, and the pursuit of Nanna Ellen. Stoker and Barker worked from Bram Stoker's notes and manuscripts for Dracula and from his biography, and they assemble the story out of letters, diary entries and cuttings in the manner of the original. The novel's premise is that the characters in Dracula were based on people its author had known, and it treats the writing of the book as part of its own plot.
Dacre Stoker had previously written a sequel to Dracula, Dracula the Un-dead, with Ian Holt in 2009, and he has worked as a custodian of his ancestor's papers.
