Down Comes the Night
Wren Southerland's reckless use of magic has cost her the place she had in the Queen's Guard and the company of the friend she loves.
About
Down Comes the Night is a fantasy novel by the American writer Allison Saft, published in 2021.
Wren Southerland is a healer whose magic is not the sort her country trusts, and when she uses it recklessly she loses her position in the Queen's Guard and her closeness with the girl she loves. With nothing much left to lose she accepts a request from a reclusive lord to come to his estate, Colwick Hall, and use her gift on a patient who is not described in any detail. What she finds is a house with its own secrets and a patient whose condition is tied to the war between their two countries, and the relationship that develops puts her in a position where the choice is between healing somebody she has been taught to hate and losing everything she has left. Saft writes the book as a gothic romance as much as a fantasy, and it is her first novel.
The whole novel is told from Wren's point of view, so the reader learns the truth about the house at the moment she does.
