Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz
An earthquake in California opens a crack in the ground, and Dorothy, her cousin Zeb and a horse fall through it into a country beneath the earth.
About
Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz is a children's novel by the American writer L. Frank Baum, published in 1908 and the fourth book set in the land of Oz.
The book opens with the earthquake, which drops Dorothy and her companions into a cavern world where the people are made of vegetables, where a city is built of glass and where the inhabitants cannot agree whether the strangers should be allowed to stay. The Wizard, last seen in the first book, falls in with them, and his bag of tricks and his willingness to improvise are useful in a country that runs on rules of its own. They travel together looking for a way out, and only a small part of the story takes place in Oz itself, which the author explained in his introduction was deliberate: he had other lands to describe and asked his readers to let him.
The novel was written soon after the San Francisco earthquake and after the author moved to California, and it followed Ozma of Oz.
