About
Don't You Forget About Me is a novel by the British writer Mhairi McFarlane, published in 2019.
Georgina's double humiliation opens the book, and the pub job is meant to be temporary and undemanding. The difficulty is her new employer, Lucas McCarthy, who was the great romance of her teenage years and who greets her as a stranger, which means either that he has forgotten a period of his life or that he has decided not to remember it. Georgina has to work with him, and the novel alternates between the present and the school years in which the two of them were close. McFarlane writes the comedy of a woman rebuilding a life from nothing, with a group of friends and a family who are funny about it, and underneath the jokes is a serious account of what it costs to be treated as though you were never there.
It is one of the author's romantic comedies, and it is written in the first person with the narrator's own opinions about everything.
