The gods of the Myriad were enormous sea creatures that fed on human fear, and thirty years ago they turned on each other and tore one another apart.

About

Deeplight is a young adult fantasy novel by the English writer Frances Hardinge, published on 31 October 2019 by Macmillan Children's Books.

The book is set on the islands of the Myriad, where enormous sea creatures known as gods were once worshipped and feared because of the way they fed on human fear from a source below the sea called the Undersea. Thirty years before the story begins, the gods destroyed each other in an event remembered as the Cataclysm, and the remains of their bodies, cut and worked as godware, are now among the most valuable substances in the islands. Hark lives on Lady's Crave with his friend Jelt, and after an accident with a stolen diving vessel in which Jelt appears to drown, a submerged piece of godware brings him back. The two of them decide to use it to heal people, and the arrangement they make with it takes them into the middle of what the islanders have decided to believe about their own gods.

Hardinge had written several novels for young readers before this one, and Deeplight was her ninth.
