About

Daughter of the Deep is a novel for young readers by the American writer Rick Riordan, published on 26 October 2021 by Disney-Hyperion. It entered the New York Times bestseller list and is a science fiction adventure rather than one of Riordan's mythology books.

Ana Dakkar is a first-year student at Harding-Pencroft Academy, a school that graduates marine scientists, naval officers, navigators and underwater explorers, and her parents died during a research voyage. Her first-year trials begin at sea, and while the students are away from the campus the academy is attacked, which leaves Ana and her classmates on their own with a ship, a set of skills and a great deal to work out. Riordan builds the book on the world of Jules Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas and The Mysterious Island, so the technology is the retro-futurist machinery of those novels rather than contemporary equipment, and the school's history is bound up with the families in Verne's stories.

The novel is set in a contemporary timeline, unlike Riordan's earlier series, and it deals with the students' training as much as with the pursuit they find themselves in.
