Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator
Taking up where Charlie and the Chocolate Factory leaves off, Charlie, his family and Mr Wonka find themselves launched into space in the great glass elevator.
About
Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator is a children's novel by Roald Dahl, published in 1972, and a direct sequel to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It was published in the United States in 1972, a year after the film of the first book, and in the United Kingdom in 1973.
The book begins where the earlier novel stopped. Charlie, his family and Mr Wonka are launched into space in the glass elevator, which moves the setting from the factory to orbit and turns the sequel into a different kind of story: the first book's confined spaces and mechanical puzzles are replaced by a vehicle and a journey. Charlie Bucket and Willy Wonka travel in it with the rest of the family, and the trip into orbit is where the sequel's own inventions begin.
Dahl's fiction for children usually keeps a small number of adults and a large amount of physical comedy, and this title uses that formula at a much larger scale. The book is usually read as a companion to the factory novel rather than as a story that stands on its own. A radio adaptation followed, with the second half broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 1983.
