By the Great Horn Spoon!
Jack's aunt must sell the family house and it still is not enough to clear her debts.
About
By the Great Horn Spoon! is a children's novel by the American writer Sid Fleischman, published in 1963 by Little, Brown. It was later adapted into a Disney film, The Adventures of Bullwhip Griffin.
Jack and Praiseworthy, his aunt's English butler, travel by ship to California after the family fortune is lost, arriving in the middle of the gold rush. Fleischman writes the pair into the working details of the period: the voyage around Cape Horn, the crowded diggings, the prices charged for a shovel or a meal, and the mixture of hopeful prospectors, gamblers and traders who followed the news of the strike.
Because the setting is historical, the novel is recommended by the California Department of Education as a classroom selection for grades three to seven. Fleischman wrote more than sixty books, most of them comic adventures, and this one spends as much time on the ships in the harbour and the people selling supplies as it does on the digging. Jack and Praiseworthy arrive knowing nothing about mining.
