Blue Remembered Earth
It is the 2160s, and humanity has repaired the Earth's climate and colonised the inner Solar System.
About
Blue Remembered Earth is a science fiction novel by the Welsh writer Alastair Reynolds, first published in 2012. It is the first book of his Poseidon's Children trilogy.
The novel takes place in the 2160s, at a point when humanity has repaired the climate of the Earth and colonised the inner Solar System extensively. An omnipresent surveillance system known as the Mechanism keeps violent crime close to unheard of, and genetic engineering has greatly extended how long people live. China, India and the nations of Africa have become the world's leading powers.
The plot follows two adult siblings as they work at a mystery in that near-utopian setting, and the mystery turns out to be something left behind by the head of their family. Reynolds has described the trilogy as an attempt to portray a more optimistic future than anything he had written before, and it follows humanity over several centuries rather than a single period.
The second book is On the Steel Breeze, which was published in 2013, and the trilogy concludes with Poseidon's Wake in 2015.
