Blood Over Bright Haven
Magic has made the city of Tiran an industrial utopia, and the magic is worked by the High Magistry.
About
Blood Over Bright Haven is a fantasy novel by the American writer M. L. Wang, published in 2023.
Sciona's ambition has been hers since childhood, and the novel is candid about its cost: she has spent two decades learning an institution's rules in order to be admitted to it, and the institution has decided in advance that she does not belong. The assistant she is given, Thomil, turns out to have a history of his own, since he came from beyond Tiran's magical barrier as a nomadic hunter and lost his family in the crossing that brought him through. The two of them are therefore the two people in the building who know what the city's magic costs somebody else, and much of the book is the slow, distrustful business of two people from opposite sides of a wall learning what the other one knows. Wang writes the ministry as a workplace as much as a magical order, with the credentials, the favours and the seating arrangements that decide who is heard, and the price of Tiran's prosperity is the argument the novel keeps returning to.
