Blood and Chocolate
Vivian Gandillon relishes the change, the sweet and fierce ache that carries her from girl to wolf.
About
Blood and Chocolate is a 1997 paranormal romance novel for young adult readers by Annette Curtis Klause, set in the contemporary United States.
The novel's werewolves are the loup-garoux, described as a species separate from both humans and wolves, with elements of each in behaviour and anatomy, and referring to themselves as Homo lupus. The book offers two conflicting accounts of their origin: descent from a prehistoric canine that absorbed matter from a meteorite, which gave it the ability to shift into human form, or descent from a tribe of ancient hunters blessed by the moon goddess Selene. Most follow the second account and worship Selene.
Vivian's difficulty is divided loyalty. She falls in love with a human named Aiden, who is kind and fascinated by magic, and she wants to be understood by him rather than feared, while the pack around her is led by nobody and a murder threatens to expose all of them. The question the book poses is what she is, human or beast, and the answer has to be worked out inside two societies that both make claims on her.
