Black Wings Has My Angel
An escaped convict on the run after a stretch of work on a Louisiana drilling rig hires a call girl for a night, and then finds that he cannot shake her off.
About
Black Wings Has My Angel is a crime novel by the American writer Elliott Chaze, published by Gold Medal Books in 1953. It was reissued twice under other titles, as One for My Money and then as One for the Money, before being reprinted under its original title in 2016.
Tim Sunblade narrates it. He has just finished four months working on a drilling rig on the Atchafalaya River after escaping from prison, and while he is staying in a motel in the Louisiana backwoods he hires a call girl who gives the name Virginia. What he intends is to leave her behind, and what happens is that they stay together.
They fight over the money he has sewn into the panels of a pink girdle, and then they settle into a relationship that is part love and part hatred. Tim has a robbery planned, and Virginia turns out to have reasons of her own for wanting to be somewhere else, which is how the two of them end up in Colorado.
