Apryl is an American who arrives in London to take possession of a flat she has inherited from her aunt, in a grand old building off the Edgware Road.

About

Apartment 16 is a horror novel by the British writer Adam Nevill, first published in the United Kingdom in May 2010. Nevill has said it took about four and a half years and seventeen drafts to finish.

The book has two strands that converge on one building. Apryl Beckett inherits her aunt's flat in Barrington House, a large block near the Edgware Road in London, and comes over from America expecting to sell it and go home; the residents are hostile, the building is full of locked doors and its own caretaker, and her aunt's belongings point at years of obsessive watching rather than living. The other strand follows Seth, a young man who works at the building and who becomes aware that something in it is reaching for people on the street outside. Nevill keeps the two of them apart for much of the novel and lets the reader work out what the building is doing before either of them does.

The novel was Nevill's first published horror novel after his debut Banquet for the Damned, and it is set in the same kind of London as his later books, with the capital's wealth and its forgotten rooms in the background.
