Angel Cake

Cathy Cassidy2009Coming-of-age

Anya had wanted to move to Britain and start again, and now that she is there she sits in a school where nobody understands her and thinks about the Polish summer skies she left behind.

About

Angel Cake is a children's novel by the English writer Cathy Cassidy, published on 4 July 2009. It is about a girl who moves from Poland to the United Kingdom.

Anya and her family come from Krakow, and the move is not the new beginning she had hoped for. At school she is treated as strange, she does not fit in with the other pupils, and what she wants is the place she came from.

Then she meets a boy called Dan, who is not a particularly good influence and who is not an angel. He is not a good influence on her. What she has to work out is what she wants for herself, rather than what the people around her want from her.

The author has said that the idea came from the experience of a young girl in her first days of living in Britain. The book was nominated for the Worcestershire Teen Book Award in 2010 and the Grampian Children's Book Awards in 2011, and it was illustrated by Sara Flavell.
