Among Others
Mori Phelps is fifteen, Welsh, and newly sent to an English boarding school after a summer in which her twin sister was killed.
About
Among Others is a fantasy novel by the Welsh-Canadian writer Jo Walton, published in 2011. It won the Nebula Award for Best Novel, the Hugo Award for Best Novel and the British Fantasy Award.
The book takes the form of the diary of Mori Phelps, a fifteen-year-old from a South Wales valley who is sent to an English boarding school. She was hurt in the accident that killed her twin sister, and she walks with a cane; her father is absent and her mother is dangerous. Reading is what she has instead of a circle of friends, and the diary records what she reads as much as what she does.
The novel was written in thirty-six days in 2008, and its author has described it as semi-autobiographical, sharing with Mori the experience of being a Welsh pupil at an English school and of walking with a cane. Most of the book is the ordinary business of a clever, unhappy, bookish teenager who counts the weeks until she can leave, and running alongside it are her attempts to work magic herself and the attention those attempts bring her.
