A Traveller in Time
Penelope is sent to convalesce at her aunt's farmhouse in Derbyshire, and while she is there she finds herself slipping back into the 1580s.
About
A Traveller in Time is a novel for children by the English writer Alison Uttley, published in 1939. It is a time-slip story, which means that both periods it describes are equally real to the girl living through them, and it takes place in rural Derbyshire.
Penelope Taberner Cameron is the girl at the centre of it. She is living in Edwardian Chelsea and is sent to a farmhouse called Thackers to recover her health, and the house is not the quiet place she was expecting.
While she is staying there she is carried back into the early 1580s, and the two periods run side by side for the whole of the book. What she becomes involved in is a scheme to free Mary, Queen of Scots, which is the event that history remembers as the Babington Plot.
The attempt failed, and the book is written with the knowledge of what happened. It is one of a group of Uttley's books set in the same part of England, and it is the one most often read today.
