A Fate Inked in Blood
Freya guts fish for a living and is married to a man she would happily hit with an axe.
About
A Fate Inked in Blood is the first novel of the Saga of the Unfated by Danielle L. Jensen, published in 2024 by Del Rey and Random House Worlds, among others. It is a Norse-inspired fantasy romance set in the fractured nation of Skaland, where power is held by jarls, the gods are close enough to be part of politics, and a person's fate can be read as a weapon.
Freya spends her days gutting fish and is married to a man she would happily hit with an axe. Because a trace of one goddess's blood runs in her, she is a shield maiden whose magic can turn aside any attack; a prophecy adds that whoever controls her fate will unite Skaland. She has kept all of that quiet, and her plan is to keep it quiet until she can find a way to become a warrior herself.
Her husband sells her out to the local jarl, and the secret comes out in a fight she is not supposed to survive. The jarl binds her with a blood oath and sets his son, Bjorn, to guard her, which is awkward, because Bjorn is precisely the distraction she cannot afford. The two of them are pushed together for the length of the book, with the oath, the prophecy and the jarl's ambition standing between what they want and what they are allowed.
The novel is the first of a series, and it establishes Freya, Bjorn, the jarl who holds her oath and the wider question of which of Skaland's rulers the prophecy will end up serving. It is a fantasy romance with a blood oath at its centre, and it assumes no knowledge of Jensen's earlier books. The second Saga of the Unfated novel continues the story from there.
